How to Spot a Locksmith Scam in Huntsville, AL

Lunar Locksmith LLC, Huntsville, Alabama. Published August 5, 2025.

Getting locked out of your car, home, or business is stressful enough. The last thing you want is to fall victim to a locksmith scam. Unfortunately, shady operators are all too common, using misleading ads and bait-and-switch pricing to take advantage of people in vulnerable moments. At Lunar Locksmith LLC, we believe in transparency, honesty, and protecting our community from these scams. Here is what you need to know to stay safe and choose a legitimate locksmith in Huntsville, AL and the surrounding areas.

Common locksmith scams to watch out for

  1. Unrealistically low prices online. Scammers often advertise a low-priced service call. Once on site, they claim the job is "more complicated" and charge hundreds more. Legitimate locksmiths will always provide clear, upfront pricing. We have unfortunately heard hundreds of horror stories of people being taken advantage of.
  2. Not actually local or licensed. Many scam listings use call centers that are not even based in your city. In Alabama, all locksmiths must be licensed by the AESBL (Alabama Electronic Security Board of Licensure). If a technician cannot show you their AESBL license, do not let them work on your property.
  3. No company branding. Professional locksmiths are typically very happy to provide business cards. If they decline when you ask for a business card or an AESBL license, it is a red flag. Legitimate companies care about their image and reputation in the community and will happily provide the assurance you need. Good locksmiths love repeat business and take pride in the service they provide to you.
  4. Drilling first, asking questions later. Scammers often jump straight to drilling your lock, which destroys it and leads to unnecessary replacement costs. Skilled locksmiths use non-destructive methods first and only drill as a last resort.
  5. Refusing to give a clear and complete price quote up front. If the person you speak to on the phone or through chat refuses to give you an actual quote for the services you request and says something like "the technician will let you know the price once he comes out," this is a commonly used bait-and-switch tactic. The person they send (who may or may not be an actual licensed technician) will give you an astronomical price once on site in hopes you will feel obligated to pay, and if you decline, they may attempt to bully you into paying a service call fee regardless. If you have not signed any agreement, send them packing. If they try to intimidate you, call the police.
  6. Repeated calls from different numbers. Once a call center has your information, several people may call you back from different phone numbers, each pushing hard to lock you in before you can think it over. The confusion is the point. A legitimate company calls you once, from one number, and gives you time to decide.
  7. Sponsored ads. When you search the internet for a locksmith in a hurry, the top result is not always the best. Some legitimate businesses run sponsored ads on search engines, but unfortunately so do scammers. We often see scam companies at the top of the results because they are paying to be there, not because they are reputable.
